Refurbishment of Grade 1 listed timber Cooling Tower
SEGRO
Project Details
This timber cooling tower was constructed during WW2 at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough. The unique tower had been included within the Grade 1 Planning status for the site. However, agreement had been reached to turn this structure into an architectural feature.
Product Selection
The timber structure had superfluous items recorded and removed, and the structure was strengthened. The cooling fan deck and housing of the fans was refurbished and then coated with Belzona 3131 (WG Membrane) and the walls clad with Rodecca coloured cladding and backlit to provide a night feature.
Interesting point
The construction method, design and detail proposals were all prepared by BCL, for approval by the architect.
